The rock arch at Dyrhólaey

The South Coast Private Tour

The south coast of Iceland is shaped by the violent interaction between ice and fire. The black sand was brought down from the mountains in catastrophic floods of meltwater from eruptions under the glaciers. I think that by understanding the geology you will enjoy the landscape more, and I will do my best to explain it. Here the characters of my favourite saga, Njáls saga, come alive. I drive my own bus, so we can do whatever we like inside the frame of the tour.

The day

  1. 01

Morning pick-up, then east past Hveragerði and Selfoss towards Hella and Hvolsvöllur, with short stops on the way.

  2. 02

Seljalandsfoss, and its little brother Gljúfrabúi hidden in the cleft next door.

  3. 03

Past Eyjafjallajökull — the volcano that stopped Europe’s air traffic in 2010.

  4. 04

Skógafoss for lunch and the climb up the stairs to the top of the falls.

  5. 05

Sólheimajökull glacier, with the option of a short walk out onto the ice.

  6. 06

Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara, the black beach — Atlantic swell, basalt columns and puffins in summer.

  7. 07

Vík, the small town out there on its own, is where we turn for home.
